Public Speaking Tip: A Confidence Tip for Project Managers

Let me ask you this: Are you a project manager who has years of
experience yet you find it difficult to engage the audience in your office?

Let me suggest this: Implement the technique you’re about to discover here today, and in your next presentation you will see a significant change.

Problem: A problem that I hear from project managers that come to my “Rock The Stage”: Ultimate Forumla” public speaking program in Bangalore is that “Mr. Bishal since my audience is same people every day, I have a problem in connecting with them daily. If I am speaking in front of new audiences, it’s easier for me. But same audience makes me feel self-conscious and also anxious if they are judging me.

Do you face similar problem maybe?

Yes?

OK, the strategy you need to implement here is that you need to engage the audience from the first seconds.

Research says that you have less than 7 seconds to make a first impression. So if they are assuming that your presentation will be boring and you start in a boring way (example: “Hi, good afternoon everyone. Today my topic is…..), they will stop listening to you.

Solution is to engage them right on. Kill the cat in the first sight. Connect with your audience bang on!

Here are a few examples:

1. Start with a question. “Hey before I start the presentation today, I want to know from you what you think about Data Base Management System. What’s your experience so far with DBMS? Anyone?”

2. Start with humor: At our Influencer & Persuasion Mastery BootCamp, I dedicate a significant time going in depth with this. Using humor a little in the beginning of your presentation or any kind of session loosens up the audience and they start liking you more.

3. Get them into an activity: Majority of learners today are kinaesthetic learners. You can’t expect that you will speak with the help of PPT and everyone will follow you. NO! When you get people into activities (more on this later on a future blog), they become an involved active member of your presentation rather than just a “listener.”

4. Tell a personal story behind the project you’re on right now. One of the lessons I learnt in my life when I started out as a professional speaker was: “Facts tell. Stories sell.” Learn how to tell your personal story and your project story in order to connect with the audience from the first second.

After working with thousands of project managers, I have understood that as a project manager you a big responsibility. A responsibility to lead people. A responsibility to inspire people. A responsibility to get the job done. And for ALL OF THAT, you need immense amount of confident in your presentation skills.

I know that when you implement these tips, you will see results. Need me to help you with that?
