How to Become Super-Confident by NOT Trying to Impress Your Audience

When was the last time you tried your best to impress your audience….and failed?

Well, if you ask me the same question, I would say: “Quite a few years ago.”

I used to have a misconception. I used to think: “My goal as a presenter is to impress people so that they like me.”

In fact, if you ask most speakers & presenters if they want to impress their audiences, most of them will answer: “Yes, I want to impress my audience.”

Well, that’s a wrong approach toward becoming impressive & powerful (in speaking & in life).

Because, there’s a difference between impressing an audience and being impressive.

Let me explain it to you.

I remember a guy named Sahil who was my college mate(back then I was studying Business Management). Sahil was creepy. He was always trying to impress girls. Actually, he used to CHASE girls. He was NEEDY for attention. He used to spend thousands of rupees each day to bring gifts for girls (only beautiful girls who were single). Duh!

Look. Women are sharp (most married men disagree though).

Very soon the girls understood that Sahil was just trying to impress them so they start dating him. But Sahil’s goal was not successful. If he ever got a girl to date him, the girl would leave him in 3 days and then date a senior boy. If he again got another girl, the girl would soon insult him by calling him: “You bas….”

Well, I am glad I have good records with girls :- )

You see the mistake that Sahil did was he CHASED girls.

He tried his best to impress, without being impressive. And while doing it, he lost his value.

It’s funny that in life
when you stop chasing what you want,
what you want chases you
.

I’ve applied the same principle in my business.

We never make cold calls, we never take anyone directly into my courses just because they apply for our programs, and we NEVER take anyone into my mentoring program without first interviewing them several times to see if they have what it takes to become successful as a speaker & presenter. We never try to convince people to join our program. I am selective about who I decide to help. They don't choose me, ever. I choose them.

My approach is a bit different than most people. And my approach works!

(Results speak, after all.)

Last week I was teaching this principle to a group of managers & IT professionals who came to Bangalore (we had people from a few different countries) to learn how to become a CONFIDENT & POWERFUL SPEAKER, how to CONNECT with an audience, and how to ROCK THE STAGE. When they learnt that, as a speaker you care less about impressing them, and more about inspiring them, the GAME CHANGES COMPLETELY.

And you win the game automatically.

Don’t be like Sahil. Don’t chase your audience. Don’t be needy. Don’t be creepy.

Rather, build your self-image, know your presentation very well, care for the people who are there to get your message and THAT will give you an immense sense of power. THAT makes you impressive WITHOUT you trying to impress them.

Remember that CONFIDENCE IS SEXY.

Be CONFIDENT!

When is your next presentation?

What will be your mindset this time?

How will you SHOW UP in a way that is HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE?
