4 Things to CHECK before Choosing a Personal Coach

WARNING!!

Are you looking for a coach? Then read this post carefully before investing with one.

Before I decide to start coaching an individual, I schedule a telephonic interview with them ahead of time and see how much coachable they are, I understand their current situations and how much sincerity they have.

If all things go well, I take them.

If they don’t fit into my coaching programs, I tell them right there: “Hey. Looks like that you have great dreams, but my program and you are not a good fit for each other. And here is why….”

More often than not, I decline a lot of client. Ooops. And this is not a statement of arrogance…I am just telling you the truth and how I run my business.

At the same time, I have my coaches as well. My career started with the help of the legendary coach Mark Hunter (2009 World Champion of Public Speaking) from Australia and we had a coaching agreement via skype. Now, people often ask me: “Why did you choose Mark? Why not someone else?”

Well, that’s what this blog is all about.

4 things you need to keep in mind before investing with a coach:

1. Make sure that he has fruits in his trees. Hehe. Don’t think I am talking about tangible fruits. I am talking about results. In India, I see a lot of “certified coaches” who are relationship coaches and their marriage is breaking. I see many “certified financial coaches” who have not more than 50,000 Rupees in the bank. I also see a lot of “Certified Communication Coaches” who have hardly any experience in front of real crowd. These people can teach you a lot of “theory” that they read in books and that they learnt in their “coaching academy” but they lack real practical knowledge. Beware of them. So before hiring a coach, make sure he has results in the areas that you are hiring him to help you with

2. Your coach should have a genuine interest in you & your growth, NOT just your money. As coaches we get paid handsomely for adding extreme value to people who serve. One of the things Mark Hunter taught me is that Service Comes Before Profit.

So make sure that your coach is interested in your growth as a speaker/businessperson, and your life, NOT just in the coaching fee you will pay him/her

3. Make sure your coach is up-to-date with the market and strategies that work today. Recently I had a client (to protect his identity we will call him Asit) came to me (an employee of NIKE) who came to my “Present Like A Champ BootCamp” and at the end of the event, he came near me and told me about a “Certified NLP Coach” that he went to who couldn’t help him at all- because all that the coach taught him was a few theoretical aspects of Public Speaking which was hard to understand and learn. Asit left the coach in the middle of the 90-day program though he paid a significant amount of money.

Don’t make mistake like Asit- make sure your coach knows real, practical and up-to-date strategies

4. Make sure your coach is willing to help you beyond an “agreement”. If your coach is supposed to help you once a week on skype and if you email him, and he doesn’t email back (because he thinks you didn’t pay him for emails), then he’s a jerk. Like I mentioned before, your coach should have a genuine interest in you and your growth. He should help you when you need- if his schedule permits.

I always text, call back, email back my clients and past clients, and also people who are not my clients. Why do I do that? Because Mark Hunter taught me to have a genuine interest in people’s growth
