Have you ever faced a situation where you knew you achieved something in your life with a lot of hard work, but people called you “LUCKY” for that?
OK, a little different question.
Have you ever seen someone REALLY GREAT at speaking/art/dance and you thought: “Man, he’s so lucky to be so great!!”
Well, me too!
In the past when I used to see my favourite speakers on YouTube, on Stage, or on TV, I used to think: “They are lucky. I am not successful because I am not lucky!!”
I was so wrong…
The reality is luck comes from work. One of my mentors always told me: “Bishal, the harder you work, the luckier you get.”
So true.
Let me explain with a real-life example.
A few weeks ago we were celebrating my parents’ anniversary, and a quite a few people were invited for dinner. It was evening time, at around 8 pm, when everyone started coming.
All were enjoying the starters, and I was enjoying serving as well as chatting with them, making THEM talk, and giving them a good pair of ears that can listen.
One of the people in the relatives was previously a business owner, and she started asking me about my business.
“My business is really great, and we have been progressing like never before. We are helping more people with our signature program ROCK THE STAGE: Ultimate Formula and we are helping more & more people to speak with confidence with our public speaking courses and presentation skills training programs in Bangalore. How is your business going?”
“Well, Bishal. I am very happy about your success. But I am not that active in my business now. I have my family to take care of, and as of now the business is in the backbench.”
I said: “OK, good. Everyone has different priorities, and I am so happy you are clear about your priorities.”
“Yes, Bishal. And I am so happy to see your success. You are all over the place. You were on Times of India. You have well over 1,000 YouTube videos. You work hard and enjoy the freedom that success brings.”
I smiled.
She was right.
Suddenly there was ANOTHER lady who came joined the conversation. We will call her “Miss Mediocrity.” Miss Mediocrity came and said: “Well, business is all about luck. Without luck, none can be successful.”
WHAT?
What did she just say?
She kept going: “I have seen many people not become successful because they are not lucky. So definitely I know success is a luck.”
Just so you know, “Miss Mediocrity” has never been in business. Never got good marks in her studies. She failed many times in school. She was never successful in any relationship. And by the way, she is never respected much by people.
Miss Mediocrity reminded me that average people think success is luck.
The reason she sees my success and thinks I am lucky is because she was watching TV when I was practicing day in and day night for my public speaking success.
The reason she sees my success and thinks I am lucky is because she was sleeping when I was awake at 2:30 AM writing my book.
The reason she sees my success and thinks I am lucky is because she was going out with friends and wasting time when I was talking to people after people on phone, trying to make my name out there, trying to make myself famous.
The reason she sees my success and thinks I am lucky is because she was busy condemning people when I was busy creating videos to help people.
I feel sad seeing these people. Because people like “Miss Mediocrity” never get to taste success. People like her never get to experience financial freedom. They never get to enjoy CONFIDENCE! Because they think SUCCESS IS AN ACCIDENT.
People who are confident, are not confident by accident. They worked for it.
People who are financially free, are not financially free by accident. They worked for it.
People who are great artists, are not great artists by accident. They worked for it.
People who are GREAT SPEAKERS, are not great speakers by accident. They worked for it.
Right now when you are reading this article, there is someone who is watching TV or sleeping or passing time.
When you become successful, that Miss/Mr. Mediocrity will come to you and tell you too: “You are so lucky.”
At that time, don’t get angry. Just smile, give that person some ice cream and ask them to lick the ice cream instead of licking you.
