How to Become an Entrepreneur: 3 Biggest Myths that may be Stopping You

When I was studying in a premier management college, I often asked this question to my fellow classmates and seniors: “What’s your career goal? What are you going to be and going to do once college is over?” Trust me, 99% of the times I heard the same answer: “Once I finish my college, I am going to work for a good company, for 2-3 years. In that 3-year period I am going to save up a lot of money, and then I will start my own business. All my ideas are right here, in my head.”

Have you ever heard the same answer? Have you ever given the same answer?

It’s always good to have a dream of starting your own business or becoming an entrepreneur.

Some actually start doing it, and succeed.

Some start doing it, and fail.

Some never start! They just talk!

I have found out 3 myths that keeps most people from becoming an entrepreneur. I have found them out and categorized them for your benefit. Here are the 3 myths:

“I need a lot of money to start any business”

Nothing can be further from the truth. While it is true that having a good capital helps you in many ways, you don’t always need “a lot of” money to start a business. You need smartness, a desire to win, attitude of learning and mark of bouncing back from failures. Some of the biggest business tycoons in the world started with small money. You can, too. Don’t let lack of “big money” stop you from starting your first business.

2. “But I don’t have a lot of experience yet”

Another one. Yes, you need experience, but if you don’t have it- go ahead and get some. Most people procrastinate because of their desire to be “PERFECT.” And perfection doesn’t exist. Your perfect situation or perfect experience will never come. You have to start, and you will start getting experiences.

You don’t have to be experienced to get started, but you do have to get started to become experienced.

3.“What if I fail?”

Ahh fear of failure! Common for most people. Most people today live a life of fear. “Well, what if I start the business and make no money?” “What if I start the venture and my friends laugh at me?” “What if I fail? Then my family members and my current friend-circle will make fun of me!” Their inner dialogue is: “What if?”

Change it from “What if it doesn’t work” to “what if it does work.”

Change it from “What if I make no money” to “What if I do make some money in the first year?”

Change it from “What if I make mistakes” to “What if I learn a lot and then apply the lessons in my business ahead?”

See, that small shift in your head will give you a lot of encouragement & confidence to at least go ahead see the world. If you fail, get back one more time. If you make no money, study your industry more- model successful people within your industry- attend seminars. Business is a skill. And if nothing ever works out, so what? You can always go back to a job! Duh!

Being an entrepreneur, I can tell you that it’s a life of a king. You can serve other people, work when you want to, chase your passion, live your dreams and make a lot of money. If I could go back and start all over again, I would still choose entrepreneurship as my way of being, one more time.
