Do you want to connect with your audience?
One of the things I teach our attendees at our “Present like a Champ Bootcamp” is that speaking is not same as “connecting.” One of the reasons you’re reading this blog is that you are looking to improve your public speaking and communication skills. So now let me explain a small difference between “just speaking to your corporate audience” and “deeply connecting with them.”
One small yet profound tip you can get is, learn to ask rather than just telling. Do you like when people tell you to do something, or do you like when they ask you to do something? Asking questions during presentation is huge and really important for them to feel like a part of your presentation. For example, when a presenters wants to give statistics, he says something like: “In our company 80% of the employees are busy doing non-productive work between 1 pm to 3pm.” But an excellent presenter would say something like: “Do you know that 8 out of every 10 people of our company waste a lot of time between 1pm and 3pm? (…pause…) Are you one of those 8 people?” See the difference? You are asking, instead of telling. If you want, write this down somewhere: Audience members like to be asked more than they like to be told. I mean, think about yourself. Don’t you like when people ask you if you could do something rather than being told or instructed. Remember, you are a speaker, a presenter, a messenger, so sound like one. Don’t try to sound like a boss. People today like a subject discussed by a friend. They don’t like a subject taught by a boss. So, be friendly and ask more than you tell. Will you do that?
